Why risk can increase

NIH notes that the risk of balance problems increases with age. Possible contributors include sensory changes, musculoskeletal limitations, medication effects and conditions affecting the inner ear or brain.

Falls are not inevitable

Good lighting, secure handrails, clear walking paths, nonslip bathroom surfaces and appropriate professional assessment can reduce risk.

Review medications and symptoms

Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements to your healthcare visit. Note when symptoms happen, how long they last and whether hearing or neurological symptoms occur.

Avoid the supplement shortcut

Age-related imbalance is not one condition with one cause. Buying a “balance supplement” before investigating the reason can waste time and miss treatable problems.
