The three major information streams
| Vestibular system | Inner-ear structures detect head movement and orientation to gravity. |
|---|---|
| Vision | Your eyes help establish movement and position relative to the environment. |
| Body sensors | Muscles, joints and touch receptors report position and contact with the ground. |
What the brain does
The brain compares these signals and coordinates eye movements, posture and corrective muscle responses. Conflicting or abnormal signals can contribute to dizziness or unsteadiness.
Why symptoms deserve assessment
Balance problems can relate to the inner ear, brain, medications, blood pressure, vision, injury and other causes. A supplement cannot identify which system is responsible.
When to seek help
Talk with a healthcare professional if you feel unsteady, experience spinning, fall, feel faint, have blurred vision or become disoriented.
